Expert-led

Independent advice

What information do you need to compare business gas prices?

Our experts need a few details about your gas supply before they can request accurate prices from suppliers.

A recent gas bill

  • A bill from the last few months gives our experts almost everything in one document, including your unit rate, standing charge and usage.

Your MPRN

Annual gas consumption

  • Your annual consumption in kWh is the figure suppliers use to work out your rates, and it is usually shown on your bill.

Current supplier

  • Knowing who supplies your gas now helps our experts see what you are paying and how it compares to the rates available.

Contract end date

  • Your end date decides when your new contract can start, and knowing it means our experts can price your supply at the right time.

Business address

  • Gas distribution costs vary by location, so your full site address and postcode let suppliers price your supply accurately.

Compare business gas prices before your contract ends

Leaving your renewal until the last minute limits your options. Comparing early gives our experts time to find you a competitive deal.

Avoid out-of-contract rates

Fixed energy contracts can automatically roll onto unfavourable out-of-contract rates. Compare early to get your next contract in place as your existing one ends.

More time to look

Starting early means your prices are not rushed. It gives you the time to fully evaluate your options.

Budget with confidence

Knowing your new fixed rate ahead of time lets you plan your gas costs for the year rather than being exposed to variable out-of-contract rates.

What to look for when you compare business gas prices?

A gas quote is more than the unit rate. Here are the key factors our experts will talk you through to help you make a decision.

Unit rate

  • This is the price per kWh of gas you use, shown in pence. The unit charge that will appear on your bill will be calculated based on gas meter readings.

Standing charge

  • A daily fixed charge that applies regardless of your usage. A quote with a low unit rate can work out more expensive once the standing charge is added.

Expected annual cost

  • Our experts will use your estimated annual gas consumption to calculate an expected annual cost of each quote, allowing a fair comparison incorporating unit and standing charges.

Contract length

  • Fixed business gas contracts typically last between 1 and 5 years. Our experts will recommend a length based on the needs of your business.

Start date

  • Your quote is priced around when the contract begins, so the date needs to line up with the end of your current contract. Our experts make sure the two match up.

Payment terms

  • How and when you pay can change what you are charged, and some rates depend on paying by direct debit. It is worth knowing before you sign.

Comparing business gas prices if you're out of contract

If your fixed contract term has ended without a new contract in place, you may be placed on your supplier’s out-of-contract rates. These are the default prices applied when there is no current agreement, and they are usually much higher than a fixed deal. Deemed rates work the same way and apply if you have moved into a premises and started using gas without agreeing a contract.

The advantage is that you are not tied in. Neither out-of-contract nor deemed supply has a fixed end date, so you can switch at short notice rather than waiting for a renewal window.

If you have moved premises, a change of tenancy needs completing with the existing supplier before a new contract can start. Our experts can arrange that alongside your comparison.

Every day without a contract costs more than it needs to, so the sooner you get one in place, the better. Send us your details and our experts will compare the rates available to you.
