What information will Consultiv ask for when comparing business energy?

Our energy experts need a few details about your business and how it uses gas and electricity before they can compare business energy prices for you. Below are the details we will ask for.

  • Business name and contact details. The registered name of your business, along with a contact name, phone number and email address so our energy experts can reach you with your quotes.
  • Business address. The supply address for each site you want quoted. If you operate more than one location, tell us all of them so we can look at your sites together.
  • Meter details. Your MPAN for electricity and MPRN for gas. Both identify your supply and appear on your bill.
  • Your current arrangements. Your existing supplier, your unit rate and standing charge, and the type of contract you are on.
  • Annual consumption. How much electricity or gas your business uses each year in kWh. This is the figure suppliers use when preparing bespoke quotes.
  • Contract end date. Business energy quotes are tied to a specific start date. We’ll ask for your current contract end date to get quotes that start at the correct time and avoid expensive out-of-contract rates.

How to compare business energy quotes?

When comparing business energy quotes, the unit rate is only one part of the cost, and the contract terms matter just as much. Our energy experts will talk you through each quote – but it helps to know what you are looking at. Here are the key factors to check when comparing business energy quotes.

  • Unit rate and standing charge. Look at both together, because a low unit rate can be offset by a high daily standing charge. Working out the expected annual cost using your consumption is the best way to see which quote is cheaper.
  • Contract length and exit terms. A multi-year contract fixes your rate for longer but commits you for longer too. Check the term, the notice period and any exit fees.
  • Contract type. Your quotes can be either fixed, flexible or pass-through, which decides which cost elements can change during the contract. Ask our experts to explain what each one means for your business.
  • Green energy options. Check whether the quote includes 100% renewable electricity or carbon offset gas. Some suppliers include it as standard, others charge a premium.

Compare business energy prices

Comparing business energy suppliers can be time-consuming, particularly when you’re balancing the demands of running your organisation. Here’s how our experts can help.

Competitive rates

  • Suppliers can quote very different prices for the same business. Comparing helps you find a competitive tariff based on reviewing multiple options.

Know your options

  • Your current supplier's offer is only one of the business electricity prices or business gas rates available to you. Comparing suppliers shows you alternatives before you decide whether to renew.

The right contract terms

  • Price is not the only difference between suppliers. Taking the time to compare lets you look at contract length, contract type and terms alongside the rate.

Business energy is priced per site, not off a standard tariff, so the rates you are offered are specific to your business. These are the factors behind them.

  • Your annual consumption. How much gas and electricity you use is the biggest factor in the rates you are offered, as suppliers price larger volumes differently to smaller ones.
  • Wholesale market prices. The wholesale electricity and gas markets change daily, so the date you choose to compare impacts the rates available to you.
  • Your location. Network charges vary by region, so two identical businesses in different parts of the country can be quoted different prices.
  • Your meter type. Non-half-hourly and half-hourly meters are priced differently, and your meter also determines the level of usage data suppliers can see.
  • Contract length. Suppliers typically price different tariff lengths separately, so a 1 year contract and a 3 year contract will not carry the same unit rate.

What happens after you request a comparison?

Once you have sent us your details, our energy experts take over. Here is what to expect.

We confirm your details

  • One of our energy experts will get in touch to check through the information you have submitted. At this point you can tell us about any preferences you have, such as contract length or a fixed rate.

We get your authority

  • Before we can approach suppliers, you will need to sign a letter of authority. This short document gives us the necessary permission to request bespoke quotes on behalf of your business.

We approach suppliers

We explain your quotes

  • Your expert will go through each quote with you, explain what the rates and terms mean for your business, and answer any questions before you decide.

Your contract is set up

  • Once you have chosen, we handle the paperwork with your new supplier and confirm the date your contract starts.

Your supply goes live

  • On your start date, your supply transfers to your chosen supplier. Nothing changes at your site, your supply is not interrupted, and you simply start being billed at your new rates.

The tariff you choose decides how your rates behave over the contract, and whether they can change before it ends. Our experts will recommend the right one for your business, but here is what each type means.

Fixed rate tariff

On a fixed energy contract, your unit rate and standing charge are agreed for the length of the term. Your bills still change with how much you use, but the rates themselves do not move.

Variable rate tariff

Your unit rate can go up or down during the contract in line with the wholesale market. There is scope to benefit if prices fall, though your costs are harder to plan for.

Flexible rate tariff

On a flexible energy contract, your energy is bought in stages across the term rather than all at once. This option tends to suit energy-intensive industries.

Pass through tariff

The energy element of your rate is fixed but network and environmental charges are passed on as they are, so those parts of your bill can change during the contract.

Green energy tariff

Your electricity is matched with renewable generation, and your gas can be offset or part biomethane. Some suppliers include this as standard, others charge a premium for it.
