Why use Consultiv for your business gas prices?

We source prices from our panel of over 20 trusted business energy suppliers so you can see the rates available to your business in one place. Here are three reasons to let our energy experts handle it for you:

Expert-led

  • Our energy consultants know the gas market and have direct supplier relationships, so you get competitive rates without doing the legwork yourself.

Independent advice

  • We are not tied to any single business gas supplier. Our experts review the rates available to us and recommend the option that suits your business.

Proven experience

  • We have secured business energy contracts for more than 5,900 clients with over 22,800 meter points.

We’ve built strong relationships with suppliers over many years, and those connections give our consultants access to current business gas prices from across the market.

There is no single figure for current business gas prices. What your business pays depends on how much gas you use, your meter type and when you agree your contract. The easiest way to see today’s rates is to let our experts gather current market quotes based on your business’s individual needs.

Our energy consultants track the market daily and source rates from our panel of over 20 suppliers for your business.

The table below shows the latest average business gas prices per kWh, based on government statistics for the non-domestic sector.

The average below relates to Q1 2026, the most recent published data. However, rates have increased significantly since then due to the ongoing conflict in Iran.

The gas rate available to your business also depends on your usage and your meter type, so the most accurate figure comes from quotes based on your business’s individual needs.

Business size Annual consumption (kWh) Gas rate (p/kWh)
Very small Up to 278,000 6.99p
Small 278,000 to 2,777,000 4.28p
Medium 2,778,000 to 27,777,000 4.12p
Large 27,778,000 to 277,777,000 4.19p

Rates are shown in pence per kilowatt-hour and exclude the Climate Change Levy and VAT. Source: Gov.uk – Q1 2026 Gas and electricity prices in the non-domestic sector.

Cheap business gas prices

The cheapest business gas deal is not always the one with the lowest unit rate. A headline rate can look competitive and still cost you more once the standing charge, the contract length and any exit terms are taken into account.

Our consultants check the full cost of every quote against your expected annual usage, then time your contract to the market so you secure the rate at the right moment.

What affects business gas prices?

Several factors combine to determine what your business pays for gas, from how much you use to the meter on your site. Understanding what drives your bills is the first step towards a competitive deal.

Your gas usage

  • Your annual consumption has a direct impact on the rates suppliers will offer. A small office uses far less than a hotel or a manufacturing site, and suppliers price accordingly.

Your meter type

  • The type of business gas meter on site affects both your pricing and the contracts available to you. Your Meter Point Number MPRN identifies the specific business gas connection you are quoting for.

Contract length

  • The length of your contract affects the prices you are offered. A fixed energy contract can protect you from price rises over a longer term, while a flexible contract gives larger users more room to respond to a changing market.

Transportation charges

  • Getting gas to your premises has a cost of its own, covering the national transmission system and your local distribution network. These are part of the non-commodity costs on your bill, and they vary by where you are and how much you use.

Number of sites

  • If your business operates from more than one location, the number and spread of your sites affects your pricing. Suppliers can quote a multi-site contract that covers them all, which is often easier to manage than arranging each one separately.

What is included in your business gas prices

Your unit rate is not a single cost. It is made up of several separate charges, some set by your supplier and many outside their control. Understanding what sits behind the rate helps you see why quotes differ.

Standing charge

A fixed daily cost that applies regardless of your usage, covering the cost of maintaining your supply. It means a low unit rate can still work out expensive. Find out in our guide to business energy standing charges.

Green Gas Levy

A government charge on licensed gas suppliers that funds the Green Gas Support Scheme and biomethane injection into the grid. The Green Gas Levy is recovered through your bill and is largely fixed, whichever supplier you are with.

Climate Change Levy

The Climate Change Levy is a tax on business gas use, charged per kWh on top of your unit rate. Some businesses qualify for relief or exemption, and our experts can advise whether yours does through a Climate Change Agreement.

Supplier margin

The supplier's own operating costs and profit, added on top of the charges above. It is one of the few elements genuinely open to competition, which is why comparing business gas suppliers helps you find a competitive tariff.

VAT

Business gas quotes are given without VAT, which is added to your bill at 20% for most businesses. A reduced rate of 5% applies in some cases, such as charities or very low usage sites, and the VAT rules on energy bills set out who qualifies.

Business gas tariffs to consider

Business gas is not sold using a single type of contract. The right one depends on your usage, how much risk you are comfortable with and how much certainty you want over your bills.

Fixed

  • Your unit rate and standing charge stay the same for the whole contract, for up to five years. This protects you if the market rises and keeps your budgeting predictable, though you will not gain if prices fall. Best for businesses that want certainty over their bills.

Flexible

  • You buy your gas in several purchases across the contract rather than fixing one rate up front. This lets you buy when prices are lower and spread your risk, but your cost is not fixed and needs active management. Flexible energy contracts are best for larger businesses with high gas consumption.

Green gas

  • Your supply is matched with biomethane, backed by Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin. This costs more per kWh than a standard contract, but lets you report lower emissions in your Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting.
