Consultiv Utilities recently had the pleasure of working with an East London School Academy looking to secure competitive energy contracts, gain long-term financial security, improve energy efficiency and take steps towards lowering carbon emissions.

Our work with the Academy began with the identification of significant cost-saving opportunities and the pursuit of a Climate Change Levy (CCL) rebate across all sites. To date, the Consultiv team have calculated over £50,000 in potential savings back to the Academy.

From this initial success, subsequent initiatives included the delivery of Display Energy Certificates (DEC). Once produced, a DEC is valid for 10 years if the usable floor space is below 1000m². We also took steps to provide the Academy with an EPC and advisory report, offering recommendations on how best to reduce their carbon footprint and lower their overall energy costs.

Our Sales Specialist, Dale Forster, worked closely with the team at the Academy to ensure that any recommendations would be realistic to implement and not hamper the quality of education or affect the facilities offered by the school. The Head of Estates & Operations at the Academy, expressed his gratitude for Dale and the rest of the Consultiv Utilities, saying:

This includes reclaiming CCL costs where they were needlessly paid, covering the costs of our yearly display energy certificates, and helped to identify a problem with our gas meter not working properly.”

This level of support is what we pride ourselves on at Consultiv Utilities. We were able to deliver substantial cost savings to the Academy on both procurement and kVA usage. It was discovered that their previous supplier stated Gas usage was 200,000 KWH, when it truth their meter was consuming more than 2,000,000 KWH.

We reviewed all of the Academy’s current contracts, as well as the utility meters on each building on the Academy’s grounds. We discovered multiple suppliers spread across several meters, and few of these contracts were aligned in terms of the contract end dates. This created a complex and challenging situation that made it almost impossible for the school to effectively manage their usage and outgoings.

Our team of energy procurement experts were able to negotiate all of the Academy’s energy contracts with one supplier, arranging extensions based on market knowledge. Not only did this help to create a much more straightforward and efficient payment and process structure. It also allowed us to further negotiate a competitive utilities package that was far more cost-effective.

One of our main goals was to make sure the Academy were not subject to volatile inflationary  pressure on its energy costs. As such, our negotiations were focused on achieving maximum savings within the context of a secure set cost for the future.
