Did you leave ESOS Phase 2 until the last minute?

ESOS Phase 2 & SECR

There is no doubt that the energy market is experiencing some challenges at the moment. To suggest otherwise would be disingenuous, as many customers have witnessed price volatility and a number of suppliers struggling to keep their heads above water. However, at Consultiv Utilities we know that the secret to navigating the energy market lies in making sound judgements and preparing well for any future eventualities.

A prime example of this can be found in the Energy Saving Opportunity Scheme (ESOS). We are urging customers to give the scheme their attention now so that they are fully prepared ahead of the compliance deadline. It takes place every four years with the next compliance deadline being 5th December 2023. If you aren’t familiar with ESOS or the new Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) scheme, read on.

What’s the difference between ESOS and SECR?

ESOS is a mandatory energy assessment and energy saving identification scheme for large organisations, implementing the requirements of the EU Energy Efficiency Directive (2012).  It takes place every four years with the next compliance deadline being 31 December 2023.

The scheme applies across the whole of the UK, with the goal of identifying £1.6 billion in energy savings.  Qualifying organisations need to have an energy audit of their buildings, fleet and processes, including site visits to a sample of buildings within the organisation’s portfolio.  The aim is to quantify energy consumption and identify energy savings which will also ultimately save you money.

SECR is another new industry legislation that businesses must adhere to, replacing the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) scheme.  It is an annual obligation that requires qualifying companies to publish their total energy consumption and carbon footprint in their annual published accounts together with targets for reducing emissions.

If you are yet to achieve compliance, we’re here to help. Whether you have already complied with earlier phases of the schemes or are entirely new to them, we can guide you through the requirements and assist you in achieving both ESOS and SECR together for ease and economic advantage. Taking proactive steps now will help to avoid significant challenges in meeting your annual SECR deadline and the ESOS Phase III deadline in 2023.

ESOS, in numbers

Our compliance partner, Sustainable Footprints, have managed ESOS compliance for more than 150 clients across countless sectors and industries, including aviation, freight, manufacturing, retail and charity. Throughout ESOS phase I and II, they have identified savings of over £25 million and more than 200 million kWh.

Having worked with such a diverse range of companies, they’ve seen the benefits of ESOS first-hand. Some of the businesses they’ve worked with have seen fantastic savings. Here are just a few of the headlines from recent clients:

  • 16 million kWh/year (£1.4 million savings/year) for a logistics company
  • 1.5 million kWh/year (£130,000 savings/year) for a national children’s charity
  • 500,000 kWh/year (£150,000 savings/year) for a social housing provider
  • 600,000 kWh/year (£80,000 savings/year) for an aerospace and defence corporation
  • 1.8 million kWh/year (£150,000 savings/year) for a textiles manufacturer

Geri Findlay, Sustainable Footprints’ Director says,

”Every organisation across every sector has been hit by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic which means that finances are tighter than ever before.  ESOS is a great opportunity for businesses to identify where they can save money.  Quite often these can be by adopting no or low-cost recommendations.  Although it is a mandatory scheme, many organisations we work with embrace it as they have seen the value and the savings that can be achieved from the completed audits.”

Get ahead early and make ESOS work for you

ESOS is mandatory for organisations with either:

  • 250+ employees
  • a turnover of £44 million, or
  • a balance sheet of £38 million.

Our compliance service includes the completion of buildings, fleet and process audits. It also covers an energy analysis report with costed recommendations to reduce your energy and save money. We also make additional recommendations to improve your company’s overall energy management, which can lead to further efficiencies. Final ESOS compliance will be signed off by a registered Lead ESOS Assessor, with activities designed to support future SECR and ISO 50001 requirements. Booking your ESOS now will guarantee that you will meet the compliance deadline and give you peace of mind.  It will also enable you to avoid inevitable price increases the closer we get to the deadline.

If you’re also eligible for SECR, you can book our ESOS and SECR packages. This will save you money, and will guarantee your compliance for up to the next three years.

Similarly, SECR is required for any UK quoted company or LLP, or any organisations that meet two of the following requirements: an annual turnover of £36 million+; a balance sheet of £18 million; and 250+ employees.

Our SECR compliance service guarantees that clients meet the necessary criteria and includes a SECR statement for inclusion in annual accounts. A background emissions annual report and an easily auditable supporting evidence pack are also included. These compliance activities are specifically designed to support ESOS, ISO 50001 and wider ESG reporting activities.
