Installing electric vehicle (EV) charging points at business premises offers a wide array of benefits that extend far beyond demonstrating environmental consciousness. Shops, cafés, gyms and hotels are already seeing this: if people can charge their vehicle while they’re doing other things, it’s a win-win. Plus, you can list your charger on Google Maps – increasing your business’ visibility.
Enhancing employee satisfaction and recruitment
If you’ve got employees with electric cars (or considering making the switch), being able to charge at work is a big deal. It saves them time, helps to combat ‘range anxiety’ and shows you’re paying attention to the small things that make a difference.
Positive financial impact and revenue generation
Businesses can experience positive financial gains from investing in EV charge points. This includes cost savings for company and staff vehicles, as electric vehicles are generally cheaper to operate per mile and have lower maintenance costs than petrol or diesel cars.
You can also generate additional revenue by charging a fee to customers, employees or the public, with intelligent online platforms available to manage billing and tracking.
For businesses with electric fleets, there are also tax benefits such as exemptions from fuel duty, road tax, and company car (BIK) tax. Companies can also potentially claim 100% of installation costs as a capital allowance, with some expenditure qualifying for a 130% enhanced deduction.
Are there any grants available from the UK government?
The UK government offers various grants and incentives to significantly reduce the upfront costs of installation, such as the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) and the EV Infrastructure Grant for Staff and Fleets. These grants can cover a substantial portion of installation costs.
Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS)
This scheme covers 75% of the total installation costs, including purchase and installation, capped at a maximum of £350 per charge point socket.
You can receive aid for up to 40 sockets across all their sites. For state-funded education institutions, the grant covers up to 75% of costs, up to £2,500 per socket, also for up to 40 sockets across all sites.
The WCS can be used in conjunction with the EV Infrastructure Grant for Staff and Fleets, but not for the same charge points. Funding is confirmed until March 31, 2026.
EV infrastructure grant for staff and fleets
Designed specifically for small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs), this grant helps cover the costs of wider building and installation work required for multiple EV charge point sockets, including those planned for future installation.
The grant covers 75% of the cost of the infrastructure work, up to a maximum of £15,000 per site. It also provides up to £350 per charge point socket installed and up to £500 per parking space enabled with supporting infrastructure.
You can receive up to five grants across five different sites.
