What is green gas?

Green gas, also known as renewable gas, refers to biomethane, a renewable energy source produced from organic materials like food waste and agricultural residue. It functions like conventional natural gas but is carbon-neutral, helping companies reduce their carbon footprint.

By switching to green gas, businesses can support environmental sustainability, meet corporate social responsibility goals, and potentially qualify for green certifications. Additionally, green gas can provide long-term cost savings as it mitigates the impact of carbon taxes and aligns with future regulatory standards aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Green gas certificates

Certificates such as Renewable Gas Guarantee of Origin (RGGO) and Biomethane Certificates (BMCs) exist to prove the gas you consume is renewably sourced.
It is possible to have certified carbon-neutral business gas. This is when the carbon emission associated with your usage, or a percentage of your usage, is offset and invested in verified international schemes such as Gold Standard (GS) or Verified Carbon Standard (VCS).

Some suppliers also offer a mixed product where by some gas is associated to RGGO certificates and the remainder is offset.

Green gas can be expensive and as a result, is less utilised compared to renewable business electricity.

For businesses looking to invest in anaerobic digestion biomethane plants, there are financial incentives via The Green Gas Support Scheme (GGSS).

Let us help you tender for your renewable electricity and gas requirements.

FAQs

Who provides 100% renewable energy in the UK?

Today, around 40% of the UK’s energy is sourced from renewable sources. In 2022, almost a quarter of the UK’s electricity was produced by wind.
Most UK energy suppliers can now offer a form of renewable energy contract. However, there can be subtle differences between each supplier’s renewable energy offering so it’s important to look at the detail of each contract on offer.

How can you be confident the supply offered is renewable?

EcoAct assurance is also offered by some UK energy suppliers. This is an independent audit of the supplier’s renewable offering to ensure it is backed by enough Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO) certificates.

Carbon Trust also offers a certification process for renewable electricity delivered via UK energy suppliers. As with EcoAct, this is an annual audit and ensures the suppliers have enough REGO certificates to match their customers demand for the duration of the supply contract.
