What are Triad Alerts and how can your business use them?

Understanding the impact of peak power demand can give your business the upper hand when it comes to energy management

Although Triads will be phased out in 2023, there’s still plenty of time to make savings under the current system. Here’s what you need to know about the impact of peak power demand so your business can gain the upper hand when it comes to energy management

It’s no secret that energy costs are on the rise, with prices reaching record levels in recent months. As such, businesses are looking for as many ways as possible to reduce their energy usage and save on costs. A strategic approach to Triad Alerts is one such possibility.

By tracking when energy demand is at its highest, businesses can effectively avoid using too much energy when costs are highest. Notifications of these peak periods – or Triads – are known as Triad Alerts. Let’s take a closer look at how Triad Alerts work, and what benefits they can provide.

What are Triad Alerts?

In a year, there are three half hour periods of peak power demand across the National Grid. These are called Triads.

These three points are used in order to calibrate overall system costs, which are then passed on to the energy industry. Triad Alerts are notifications sent to businesses as a warning that one of these half hour periods is set to occur. Reducing electricity consumption during periods of national high demand can lead to a reduction in electricity transmission costs for the following year.

How do Triads work?

A single Triad is a half hour period of the highest electricity demand. In order to avoid Triads impacting businesses during consecutive half hours, each Triad must occur at least 10 days apart, and is set between November and February.

When power demand peaks, the National Grid network will be under maximum pressure to deliver power where it’s needed. This causes generators to bring online more expensive, and less efficient, production capacity.

By being aware of when these peak power periods are likely to occur, businesses can work together to minimise energy usage overall, saving money.

When should you act on a Triad?

Forecasting Triads is dependent on a wide array of different, and often complex, factors. That’s why many businesses opt to receive Triad Alerts. This service monitors several key influencing aspects in order to predict the likelihood of any particular day being the day when a Triad occurs. An automatic message is then sent to businesses with all the necessary information included.

With this information in hand, businesses can take informed action to avoid high energy usage during these more costly half-hour periods, as well as minimising the disruption to their everyday activities. Over time, avoiding energy usage during Triad periods can be an effective way of reducing your energy costs.
