What does net zero really mean and how can your organisation achieve it?

Information surrounding the net zero initiative is often misinterpreted but, as we see the discussions at COP26 unfold, it’s important that every UK organisation take the necessary steps to work towards combatting climate change.

The climate crisis is the challenge that will define not just our generation but that of those still to come. As evidence of climate change continues to mount, business leaders are feeling the pressure to take action. Businesses need to act now in order to meet the demands of science, governments and society as a whole.

The net zero 2050 initiative is a big part of this goal, encouraging organisations across all industries to do their part to cut down their carbon emissions. However, analysis from PwC shows that only around 8% of the world’s largest companies have pledged to becoming net zero, so clearly much more needs to be done to take effective climate action.

We’re going to take a closer look at the net zero initiative, exploring the steps your organisation needs to take in order to comply.

What is the net zero initiative?

Net zero 2050 is an initiative set up by the European Climate Foundation, with contributions from a range of experts and organisations. Net zero is a strategy being employed to satisfy the Paris Agreement and aims to balance the amount of carbon emitted to the atmosphere with the amount removed. The Paris Agreement’s goal is to limit global warming below 2 degrees Celsius when compared to pre-industrial revolution levels.

The initiative is set out to encourage businesses, buildings and organisations to commit to reaching zero-carbon by the year 2050. It also recognises that, in order to achieve this, steps need to be taken now.

The goal of reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 (or sooner) falls in line with global efforts to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

What can your organisation do?

In order to meet net zero targets, businesses need to make transformational changes, and they need to put these changes in motion today. Joining one of the many industry-specific coalitions can help, as can seeking out support from energy experts.

One way to help achieve carbon neutrality is to reduce your business’s reliance on the National Grid. Developing your own renewable energy generation and storage capability is a significant investment, but can lead to long term savings, as well as giving you more control over your energy use. Switching to electric heating and vehicles can also help you take significant strides towards decarbonisation.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) has been designed to help businesses reduce their carbon emission, preventing 90% of the emissions from fossil fuels from entering the atmosphere, so this is another avenue to explore. Your workplace can also help you set the foundations for carbon neutrality, with net zero office buildings becoming more widely used across many industries.
